A snap-shot photograph taken while walking in the Cherwell valley unexpectedly revealed a figure running by the canal. The figure transformed my reading of the scene and became the focus of interpretation. Mindful of art historical precedents: Malevich’s, Running Man and Pousin’s fleeing figure in Landscape With Man Killed by a Snake, I developed my drawing towards an image conscious of materiality, a figure made of tar and paper.
